Chapter 43

The rumours that Willow Burns was missing were spreading like wildfire online. A number of people had pointed out that she hadn’t posted any articles in two days, which was virtually unheard of when it came to London’s busiest gossip columnist. Some claimed to know that police officers had been to her house and the headquarters of the Daily Herald.

Later in the day, the Metropolitan Police issued a statement confirming Willow Burns had indeed been reported missing and that they were treating her disappearance as suspicious. Details were given regarding when and where she was last seen, and witnesses were encouraged to come forward with any information. The Met would not confirm questions from journalists asking whether the disappearance was linked with the Deinfluencer case. The chief inspector declined to comment on that, and merely stated that the investigation was ongoing and they would provide further updates as soon as possible.

No photo had been released like with Strauss and Mahmood’s murders. No body had been found as yet, but there was no doubt in many people’s minds that Willow Burns was probably the Deinfluencer’s latest victim.

Jessica wasn’t normally one for celebrity gossip in any form, but she’d watched the press release on TV and seen that DI Drennan was there, standing to the side close to the chief inspector while he delivered his brief message. That at least confirmed for Jessica that the police were connecting the Burns disappearance with the murders.

It was the day after the second meeting at Bad Boy Bangers, but rather than indulging in a sleepy Sunday or remaining cooped up in her room, Jessica had gone for a long wander in order to think. She was also aware that there was a lot of homework to do for the next day, which she knew she shouldn’t be neglecting, especially since she’d already been told off by the course leader for her walkout stunt the other day. Jessica had explained that she hadn’t made any kind of protest, she had simply left the lecture because it was painfully boring. The course leader had told her, in no uncertain terms, that although this was a paid course, she was in danger of being thrown off it unless she bucked up her ideas and started making a little more effort, including treating the lecturers with respect. There were plenty of young people who would kill to be on this course, he explained. Jessica wanted to say that she’d probably be the one doing the killing if she had to listen to him talk any longer, but she didn’t. She merely said that she understood, then left the room.

If it weren’t for the fact that her father had put time, effort and money into getting her a place on the course, Jessica would have walked away from it by now. Her father could be annoying at times with his schemes to keep her busy, and therefore out of trouble, but she knew he already had enough on his plate right now without her adding to the strain.
